Luys Scholarship Program

Luys Scholarship Program The Luys Scholarship Program ensures that Armenia thrives and creates a stronger presence in the knowledge-based global economy, standing on equal footing with leading nations.

Luys grants a loan or scholarship to Armenian students worldwide to study at the world’s top universities. A LUYS LOAN WILL TURN INTO A LUYS SCHOLARSHIP WHEN THE SCHOLAR COMPLETES ALL DUTIES REQUIRED BY THE LUYS CONTRACT FOR EACH YEAR OF STUDY.

Every year, the Luys online scholarship application period begins on April 1st (00:00 midnight, Yerevan time) and ends on July 15th (23:59, Yerevan time). Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

Luys Scholarship Program

To be an eligible applicant, you must fulfill the following three conditions:

  • Be Armenian: a citizen and resident of the Republic of Armenia, or be of Armenian descent.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 40 at the time you apply for a scholarship.
  • Be admitted to a full-time, degree-granting academic program at one of the Luys Recognized Universities.

Academic Degrees

In order to be eligible for the Luys Scholarship Program, you must be admitted to a full-time, degree-granting academic program at one of the Luys Recognized Universities. The eligible programs are:

  • Bachelor
  • Master
    (Condition for male applicants who are citizens of the Republic of Armenia: they must have fulfilled all military obligations to be eligible for a Luys scholarship for a Master’s degree)
  • PhD
    (All applications will be submitted to a selection process to evaluate the relevance of the research topic to the economic growth and development of the Republic of Armenia)

Loan/Scholarship Distribution per University

Luys Loans/Scholarships are granted to the first 10 students that submit a complete application package online (up to 10 scholarships per university that is recognized by Luys). Luys grants:

  • up to 7 loans/scholarships to citizens and permanent residents of the Republic of Armenia.
  • up to 3 loans/scholarships for other applicants of Armenian descent.

Loan/Scholarship Disbursement

Citizens and permanent residents of the Republic of Armenia:

  • Luys grants up to 50% of total tuition and related expenses with the condition of returning and working in Armenia or Artsakh for at least 3 years upon graduation.
    (Up to 1 year grace period can be granted after graduation and before returning to Armenia or Artsakh upon the decision of the Luys special committee)
  • Those applicants who commit themselves to work in the government sector of Armenia or Artsakh for at least 3 years upon graduation may be eligible to receive up to 25% of additional funding (the total funding cannot exceed 75% of total tuition and related expenses).

Other applicants of Armenian descent:

  • Luys grants up to 25% of total tuition and related expenses with the condition of participating in the Luys “Develop Armenia Together” program.
  • Those applicants who commit themselves to settle in Armenia upon graduation and work in Armenia or Artsakh for at least 3 years will be eligible to receive up to 25% additional funding (the total funding cannot exceed 50% of total tuition and related expenses).

Duties and responsibilities

The Luys Foundation expects students to make a lasting contribution to the world and strongly encourages civic participation in Armenia. Luys expects all scholars to play an influential role in the betterment of society in addition to being proud Ambassadors of the Armenian culture worldwide.

A Luys Loan will only turn into a Luys Scholarship when the scholar completes all duties required by the Luys contract for each year of study.

Main Requirements for Citizens and permanent residents of the Republic of Armenia:

  • Return to Armenia upon graduation to reside and work in Armenia/Artsakh for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Participate in the summer “Develop Armenia Together” program for each year of their studies.
  • Participate in the Luys Mentorship Program by becoming a mentor for Armenian youth between the ages of 15 and 25.
  • Donate two professional books and informational materials pertaining to their university to the Luys Library.

Main Requirements for other scholars of Armenian descent:

  • Participate in the summer “Develop Armenia Together” program for each year of their studies.
  • Participate in the Luys Mentorship Program by becoming a mentor for Armenian youth between the ages of 15 and 25.
  • Donate two professional books and informational materials pertaining to their university to the Luys Library.

* An additional and optional requirement is defined in the section titled Loan/Scholarship Disbursement.

NOTE: The money granted by Luys will remain a Loan if duties are not completed as described in the Luys contract. If a student decides to defer or cancel his/her studies and/or does not complete the required duties, the money granted must be reimbursed to the Foundation as stated in the Luys contract.

Additional Information for Luys Loan/Scholarship Applicants

  • You will be asked to provide proof of identity to verify that you are a direct descendent of Armenian parents or grandparents. Applicants that are Armenian residents will be asked to submit a valid passport or Armenian ID card. Non-residents must submit a birth certificate, copies of parents’ passports (either father or mother of Armenian ancestry), or a baptism certificate (proof that you were christened at an Armenian Church).
  • You cannot apply to Luys if you have a conditional offer from a university.
  • You are required to be a full-time student in the entirety of your degree-program. Deferment of scholarships are not allowed.
  • You must apply for a Luys Scholarship only after having applied to the university’s internal student aid office for a scholarship. The financial application/information has to be updated and submitted to Luys along with a new application for each year of study. A student may not resubmit an old scholarship application.
  • You cannot apply to Luys twice for the same academic degree level if you have already been granted a scholarship. For example, a Luys Scholar who has been funded by Luys for a Master’s degree cannot apply for a second Master’s degree.
  • You will receive support from Luys for only one degree. To receive additional support for an advanced degree (from an undergraduate to master’s or master’s to PhD), you will be placed on a waiting list and awarded a scholarship only if there is availability among the 10 openings of the university.
